IMD3901: Milestone 2

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Storyline development!

This week, our team finalized the general walkthrough that the user will experience when playing 'Canoe Journeys'. While keeping in mind the elements that the Iohahi:io wanted, we designed the style of the game so that if the scope needed to be adjusted at any point in the development process, major changes would not need to be made. To get the ball rolling, I designed a draft of what the home screen could look like!

Challenges

One of the challenges we faced this week was figuring out how we would incorporate most or all of the elements that the Iohahi:io requested. After having the question and answer session with them, we got a better understanding of what the main purpose was. This helped us to look at this project from a new perspective where as long as we achieve the goal of educating people on the history and showing the beauty of their culture, any specific pieces can be included either as an animation or a prop in the scene. We understand that there are extremely important aspects of Indigenous history and culture such as medicine and the idea of giving thanks, which we plan to implement as interactions in order to deepen the learning component. All of these details eventually add up to create a virtual experience that is as accurate as possible.

Successes

I would consider the success we had this week to be a major one. For while, it felt like our group was slightly confused about what the game was going to look like because of all the aspects that should be included. By coming up with a linear storyline for the user to follow, we can find the right areas to implement any element such as giving thanks, medicine, and lacrosse. Now, there is a clear vision of how this is all going to work, which is going to make the development process a lot easier moving forward. We've documented all of our ideas with respect to the sections of the proposal document, keeping everyone on the same page.

Next Steps

The next step for this project would be to begin some of the programming. Between Ethan and I who are the main developers, we have assigned the tasks in a way that one of us could focus on the experience of the user being in the canoe, while the other one focuses on the experience when the user is on land.
